Daniel was twelve. He found the 1973 book in the box of things that arrived with his great-grandmother's furniture. It was a monograph on the rivers of West Africa, published by a colonial natural history society. He held it for a long time. Then he asked his mother: are the rivers better now, or worse? Nadia said: some are better, because people worked on them. Some are worse, because people didn't. Daniel thought about this. Then he said: I want to work on them. Fifty-two years of a table. One twelve-year-old with a vocation. That is generational fruit.
"Key verse: Psalm 78:4 (KJV)"
This week, tell one family story to one young person. Not a moral lesson. A story — specific, honest, and attached to a real person who made a real choice.
The household that does not deliberately transmit a sense of vocation leaves the question of what its children are for to be answered by whoever is most present — which is usually a screen. Daniel's vocation was not discovered. It was transmitted: through a table, through a book, through a conversation, through a quality of attention that one generation brought to the concerns of another.
- Children whose sense of purpose is shaped by content platforms rather than family story
- Young people reaching adulthood without a sense of what they have been sent to continue
- The family stories that would ignite vocation, untold because no one created the context
Proverbs 4:1: Listen, my sons, to a father's instruction; pay attention and gain understanding. The transmission of wisdom requires a listener and a teller. Both must be present. Both must be attentive.
The world expects vocational formation to be the responsibility of schools, counsellors, and career platforms.
God designed the household as the primary context in which a sense of vocation is awakened — through story, through presence, through the quality of attention that one generation brings to the questions of another.
Psalm 78:4-7: we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord — so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. The chain of transmission is intentional: we tell, so they know, so they tell. Three generations, one act of deliberate storytelling.
"Lord, let our household transmit the stories that ignite vocation. Let the conversations at our table be ones that the next generation will still be thinking about fifty years from now. In Jesus' name, Amen."
