Elias read Isaiah 61 the night before he flew back to Kumasi. Good news to the poor. Freedom for the captive. Recovery of sight to the blind. Release of the oppressed. The year of the Lord's favour. He counted: five dimensions of the gospel's reach, none of them private, all of them visible, all of them located in the material conditions of real people's lives. This was the gospel he was returning to Kumasi to demonstrate.
"Key verse: Isaiah 61:1 (KJV)"
Today, read Luke 4:18-21 and identify the one dimension of the whole gospel your life is least engaged with. Ask God what faithful engagement in that dimension would specifically look like for you.
The reduction of the gospel to personal salvation and individual spiritual growth has produced believers who are sincerely converted and socially inactive. The whole gospel — the one Jesus announced from Isaiah 61 in Luke 4 — is simultaneously spiritual and social, personal and communal, interior and structural.
- The poor experiencing good news only about the afterlife, not about the conditions of their present lives
- The captive hearing about spiritual freedom while their material captivity is left unaddressed
- The oppressed being told to endure injustice patiently rather than being equipped to dismantle it
Luke 4:21: Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. The whole gospel is not a future aspiration managed by prayer. It is a present commission activated by renewal.
The world has separated the spiritual from the social and expects the church to stay in its lane.
God announced a gospel through Isaiah and enacted it through Jesus that refuses every attempt to separate the spiritual from the material, the personal from the structural.
Acts 10:38: God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil. The gospel in action is comprehensive — going around, doing good, healing all.
"Lord, restore in me the whole gospel — not just the dimension that is comfortable, not just the dimension that requires no disruption to my current life. Every dimension of what Jesus announced in Nazareth is mine to embody. Show me which dimension I have been avoiding. In Jesus' name, Amen."
