Samuel did not leave private equity because he had a dramatic conversion moment. He left because he spent six months applying the Quadruple Bottom Line to every deal he had done in the previous nine years and could not find one that passed all four tests on its own terms. The mathematics of conventional finance were correct. The architecture was wrong. He did not leave to become poorer or to sacrifice excellence. He left to redirect his expertise toward an architecture designed to produce what he had actually been placed on earth to produce. The pivot is not a sacrifice. It is a correction.
"No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon."
Today, name one expertise you have developed that is currently deployed in an architecture that fails the Quadruple Bottom Line. Ask what a Kingdom-aligned architecture for that expertise would look like.
Samuel's nine years in private equity were not wasted — they were misdirected. The skills, the analytical frameworks, the market knowledge, the network — all of these transferred directly to the Lagos CDFI. What changed was the architecture: the design of the financial instrument, the definition of the return, the identity of the beneficiary. The Kingdom pivot is not from excellence to sacrifice. It is from the wrong architecture to the right one.
- Kingdom practitioners with world-class skills deployed in architectures designed to produce outcomes the Kingdom does not need
- The false choice between professional excellence and Kingdom faithfulness
- The economy of abundance deprived of its most gifted practitioners because they believe the Kingdom requires diminishment
Luke 16:10-11: Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much; and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. If you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? The pivot does not abandon expertise. It redirects it toward the architecture that true riches require.
The world presents a binary: either pursue professional excellence in conventional structures, or sacrifice excellence for Kingdom purpose.
God calls His people to redirect professional excellence toward architectures that produce Kingdom outcomes — which requires both the excellence and the architectural discernment.
1 Timothy 6:17-18: Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. Not poorer. Rich in good deeds. The pivot changes what richness means, not whether to pursue it.
"Lord, I do not want to waste the skills You have given me on architectures that produce the wrong outcomes. Show me where to redirect my excellence. The pivot is not a sacrifice — it is a correction. In Jesus' name, Amen."
