The Long Time Horizon
Ecclesiastes 1 (KJV) Isaiah 58 (KJV) Psalm 104 (KJV)

The EIRI is the only metric in the framework with a stated twenty-year measurement horizon. This is the most honest statement in the entire measurement system: ecological restoration happens at the pace of ecological systems not programme cycles. Soil depleted over fifty years does not recover in five. Biodiversity lost over a generation does not return in a funding cycle. The Rift Valley trial sites show soil carbon up 34% and biodiversity up 51% at Year Five. These are significant movements. They are not completion. The twenty-year horizon is not pessimism. It is ecological literacy — the formation of practitioners who have learned to act faithfully on a time horizon they will not fully see.

Ecclesiastes 1 One generation passes the earth abides — the ecological time horizon
Isaiah 58 Repairer of Broken Walls — the identity earned across decades
Psalm 104 The cedars that God planted — creation tended on a multigenerational horizon

"Key verse: Ecclesiastes 1:4 (KJV)"

Ecclesiastes 1:4 (KJV)

⚡ This Week's Action

Today commit to one ecological practice you will sustain for ten years. Not because you will see the full result but because faithfulness operates on a longer time horizon than results.

The Demand for Immediate Results Has Produced Short-Term Ecological Interventions That Cannot Compound

The institutional incentive to show results within a funding or electoral cycle has produced ecological programmes calibrated to programme timescales rather than ecological ones. The practitioner who plants trees under whose shade they will not sit is exercising the most durable form of ecological faithfulness — and the institutional framework that cannot fund such a practitioner is producing interventions that are visible in the short term and irrelevant in the long one.

  • Ecological interventions that stop before the restoration has compounded
  • Practitioners who have lost the long-term vision because the institutions funding them demand short-term proof
  • The generation that will inherit the ecological consequences of our impatience waiting for us to hold the direction long enough

Isaiah 58:12: Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls Restorer of Streets with Dwellings. The ancient ruins require more than one generation's faithfulness. The Repairer's identity is earned across decades not within a single programme cycle.

🌐 World's View

The world expects ecological results within the timescales that institutional funders and political cycles make relevant.

✝️ God's View

God works on generational time horizons and calls His people to act faithfully on those horizons — planting what they will not harvest tending what they will not fully see restored.

Psalm 104:14-16: He makes grass grow for the cattle and plants for people to cultivate bringing forth food from the earth — wine that gladdens human hearts oil to make their faces shine and bread that sustains their hearts. The trees of the Lord are well watered — the cedars of Lebanon that he planted. God plants cedars. Cedars take centuries. The ecological time horizon of the Creator is the model for the ecological time horizon of the consecrated priest.
